August 25, 2007

The biopsy yesterday confirmed that Liam is in the early to mid range stages of rejection. Remember - rejection is a powerful (and frightening) word which is used to describe a process - not a point of destination.

The way that the doctors are handling this situation is
1) They are not panicking. They said that they have an aresnol of weapons to help the liver recover.
2) He is of MASSIVE doses of steroids, which will help his new liver tell his body to 'back off' and give it a chance to make this its new home.
3) A Nasal Gastric tube was put in yesterday so that the nutritional status would improve. It may be the case that a GTube might need to be put back in, but for the time being, Liam is learning to cope with this new tube.

Liam's blood sugars have been incredibly high due to the steroids, and the high numbers are causing him to be symptomatic (shakey hands, lack of balance, tired) - although it is being aggressively addressed. Liam showered today, walked to the elevator and back, and when he is awake, wants to be sitting up playing his Wii (birthday gift!)

Not every day is going to be monsterous progress. For today, we'll celebrate the shower!
