At morning rounds we learned that Liam will need another biopsy today on his liver. Although the diagnosis 2 days ago was that Liam was in early to mid stage liver failure, the feeling (and hope) today is that we are looking at something different.
Over the last couple of days, Liam has been receiving MEGA doses of prednisone to help suppress his body's immune system so that his white blood cells would stop attacking the liver. One of the side effects of higher levels of prednisone is that it causes the blood sugar levels to go sky high, which meant that Liam needed lots of extra insulin to help manage those numbers. Dr. Horslan explained to Liam that the extra insulin and the higher blood sugar numbers could have caused the liver to get fatty and only a biopsy would confirm that.
Biopsy is scheduled for 1:00 today and results will be available tomorrow. We are anxious for the results, but are resting in the calm demeanor of Liam's team.
One step at a time; God continues to hold all of us in the palm of His hand.
